History

RMIT University (officially Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, informally RMIT) is an Australian Public university based in Melbourne Victoria.
Founded in 1887 by Francis Ormond as the Working Men’s College, it initially opened as a night school for instruction in art, science and technology in response to the industrialization of Melbourne during the 19th century. Its foundation campus is located in the northern section of the Melbourne city center and has since become a contiguous part of the area—often referred to as the "RMIT Quarter". An initial enrollment of 320 students in 1887 has grown to around 83,000 vocational undergraduate and postgraduate students as of 2015.

The Bundoora campus, in the north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, is set in a tranquil parkland environment complete with outdoor sporting facilities for football, athletics, tennis and netball. Eighteen kilometers north-east of Melbourne city centre, the campus is divided into East and West by Plenty Road.
The Brunswick campus, six kilometers north of the city, is part of the creative and multicultural Sydney Road district close to markets, eclectic shops, pubs, and a thriving art and music scene.The campus is situated just a few minutes away from Sydney Road - a vibrant, multicultural area with a variety of shops, restaurants, pubs and markets.
