English is one of the main requirements to get admission in UK Universities and Colleges.   All students, regardless of their visa requirements are required to show that their ability to understand and express themselves in English is sufficiently high for them to derive full benefit from their academic course.

The level of competence required depends on what type of degree you wish to study.

In general , English language proficiency can be demonstrate in following ways :-

MOI – Medium of Instruction :  If student studied throughout English medium then IELTS can be waived off on providing medium of instruction letter. Only very few universities offer such waiver.

Academic Proficiency in English : Many universities in UK can waive IELTS if student secured good % in 12th or O level , IB .  Top ranked university usually ask for minimum 75% or equivalent   while average university may ask for minimum 60% or Equivalent .

University’s English test and their own discretion : Many universities are offering their own customise English test and if student can pass this test then University can use their own discretion to waive off  English language requirements . Such tests are usually follow the pattern of IELTS / TOEFL or PTE.

English Language Test :  IELTS is the most acceptable English Language test for universities as well as UKVI ( government body which is responsible to control immigration in the UK) .  UKVI approved test are called SELT - secure English Language Test (SELT) . For academic purpose mainly two tests are recognised

Trinity College London (UK only);

IELTS SELT Consortium (UK or overseas) - IELTS for UKVI

Be noted that for foundation programmes and any PG  and UG programs with presessional English , will required to have UKVI IELTS ( IELTS for UKVI) . No other test can replace this requirements of UKVI .

For PG and UG ( RQF level 6 or above), you can use non UKVI IELTS with B2 level ( no band less than 5.5) however every university has different programs requirements.

Many doubts are still remain in mind which can be cleared through following FAQ.

Q: What is the main difference between UKVI IELTS and non UKVI IELTS ?

The IELTS test for UK visa purposes (UKVI IELTS) is designed to meet certain administrative requirements that are specific to UK Visas and Immigration. Test Report Forms will be slightly different, to show that test takers have taken the test at an IELTS UK visa session. Course structure remain same but course fee will be slightly higher than non UKVI IELTS. and for Tier 4 visa  ( student visa ) academic IELTS will be required.

Q: If I take an IELTS test for UK visa purposes, can I use my result in other countries / for other purposes?

Yes. IELTS test results are accepted by more than 10,000 organisations worldwide, including universities, colleges, governments and employers.

Q: I intend to study in the UK do I need to pass a SELT?

If you  intend to study a course at degree level or above at a Higher Education Institution (HEI), the HEI can useIts own methods to assess your English language ability. It is not necessary for you to pass a SELT test.  However, the HEI may ask that you do.  If  you intend to study a course below degree level, you must have taken and passed a SELT test to meet the English language requirements . This applies to all education institutions.

Q: If I dont have enough English , then what could be my study options ?

Speaking English is not at all a barrier for you to pursue a study program in UK. There are many programs in UK Universities to teach you the English language on student visitor visa,. You can overcome your language problems in the new environment at the earliest, if you are determined to learn the language with self-interest.  Or

you can take admission in embedded college of University where usual English Language requirements is lower than University .

History

UCSC Silicon Valley Initiatives comprise a set of educational and research activities which together increase the presence of the University of California in Silicon Valley. To that end, UC Santa Cruz has set up a satellite campus at its Silicon Valley Center, currently located at the NASA Ames Research Park at Moffett Federal Airfield. The Initiatives, still in the early stages of their development, have had ambitious hopes attached to them by UCSC, among them the possibility of a home for the University's long-planned graduate school of management and the Bio|Info|Nano R&D Institute. UCSC Extension’s professional courses, and subsequent certificate programs, were crafted to support the business needs and interests of career minded, lifelong learners located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Developed with guidance from key industry leaders and academic experts, these programs present University of California-approved curricula that address the specific requirements of the discipline. Programs take a practical approach, and are structured to accommodate working professionals—with the majority of our courses offered during the evening hours and on weekends.

Location and Transport
The 2,000-acre (810 ha) UCSC campus is located 75 miles (121 km) south of San Francisco, in the Ben Lomond Mountain ridge of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Elevation varies from 285 feet (87 m) at the campus entrance to 1,195 feet (364 m) at the northern boundary, a difference of about 900 feet (270 m). The southern portion of the campus primarily consists of a large, open meadow, locally known as the Great Meadow. To the north of the meadow lie most of the campus' buildings, many of them among redwood groves. The campus is bounded on the south by the city's upper-west-side neighborhoods, on the east by Harvey West Park and the Pogonip open space preserve, on the north by Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park near the town of Felton, and on the west by Gray Whale Ranch, a portion of Wilder Ranch State Park. The campus is built on a portion of the Cowell Family ranch, which was purchased by the University of California in 1961.

The faculty consists of 60 full-time members, made up of 23 different nationalities. The current President is Jean-François Manzoni, who follows Dominique Turpin, John R. Wells and Peter Lorange. The latter ran the school from 1993 till 2008 and has been widely credited with having established IMD as one of the world's leading business schools. IMD focuses on training and developing general management and leadership skills. IMD selects experienced candidates for both the Master of Business Administration (MBA) (average age 31) and the Executive MBA (average age 41). The late 1950s - the time of our founding - was an exciting period in the history of higher education in Canada. More students were going to university than ever before. In fact, enrolment was expected to double by the following decade - an unprecedented amount of growth. Students were enrolling in record numbers because they were witnessing the link between postsecondary education and scientific and economic advances. Some would argue that the launching of Sputnik 1, the Soviet space satellite, prompted this realization, symbolizing Cold War competition in advancing science and technology. It was a catalyst for change, and from it stemmed a great wave of planning for university expansion and growth. Since most universities were reticent to expand, the only alternative was to create more universities - and hence the birth of York University. We are frequently referred to as the first of this new crop.

History

York was incorporated in 1959, with the biggest task ahead being the actual development of the University, particularly its future character. After much deliberation by York's Board of Governors, it was decided that the University would consist of a residential college, known as Glendon College; an evening college for part-time adult students from different backgrounds, generations and socio-economic circumstances, known as Atkinson College; and a large, urban, multi-Faculty campus that would eventually accommodate 7,000 to 10,000 students, known today as our Keele campus.

Location
Brandon University is located in the heart of Canada. Geographically, Brandon, a city of 50,000, is located in the western part of Manitoba, one hour north of the Canada-United States border. Brandon is a dynamic community which serves a rich agricultural and farming region. It is a very beautiful city, dotted with lots of parks, many along the Assiniboine River that winds its way through the valley. Brandon delivers excellent social, cultural and sporting opportunities - many available at Brandon University itself. The Centennial Auditorium is located on the campus and our own School of Music organizes an extensive and varied program of events. Brandon has film, jazz and folk festivals, and the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair is a major attraction you should not miss. The Keystone Centre hosts local, provincial, national and international sporting events, as well as musical and cultural events. Brandon is a city of just the right proportion: big enough to offer all the benefits of city life, but small enough to remain warm and friendly.

Can I invite my family to join me in the UK under PBS (Points based system)?

Your dependants can apply for immigration permission to join or remain with you only if:

  • you are government-sponsored and your course is longer than six months OR
  • you are doing a postgraduate level course of 12 months or longer at a publicly-funded Higher Education Institution or a 'UK recognised body' OR
  • your current or most recent immigration permission was as a Tier 4 (General) student or a pre-Tier 4 student on a course longer than six months AND
  • All four bullet points below apply:
  1. your permission is current or expired no more than three months before this immigration application AND
  2. your new immigration application is for a course that is longer than six months AND
  3. your dependant already has Tier 4 dependant or 'student' dependant immigration permission (or it is the most recent immigration permission that they had, and it expired no more than three months before this application) AND
  4. you apply for immigration permission at the same time as your dependant

Which family members can join me in the UK?

The only family members who can make applications as Tier 4 'dependants' are partners and children.

Your partner can be the following:

  • your husband or wife
  • your civil partner (civil partners are same-sex couples who have registered their partnership, to gain formal legal recognition of their relationship)
  • unmarried partner or same sex partner (You must be able to evidence that you have been living together in a relationship similar to marriage or civil partnership for at least 2 years)

Your partner must be at least 18 years old when they arrive in the UK, you must intend to live together for the duration of your studies and your partner must intend to leave the UK at the same time as you.

Children must be:

  • aged under 18 OR
  • aged 18 or over only if they are already in the UK with immigration permission as a dependant child. If your current immigration permission is not permission granted under the Points Based System, you must apply at the same time as your child for leave to remain under the Points Based System.

Can I come to the UK as a Tier 4 student with my children, when my husband remains in home country to work?

The Immigration Rules expect that both parents should be present in the UK, except in very exceptional circumstances.

(f) Both of the applicant’s parents must either be lawfully present (other than as a visitor) in the UK, or being granted entry clearance or leave to remain (other than as a visitor) at the same time as the applicant or one parent must be lawfully present (other than as a visitor) in the UK and the other is being granted entry clearance or leave to remain (other than as a visitor) at the same time as the applicant, unless:

(i) The Relevant Points Based System Migrant is the applicant’s sole surviving parent, or

(ii) The Relevant Points Based System Migrant parent has and has had sole responsibility for the applicant’s upbringing, or

(iii) there are serious or compelling family or other considerations which would make it desirable not to refuse the application and suitable arrangements have been made in the UK for the applicant’s care.

Does my UK born baby need a visa?

It is not necessary for a baby born in the UK to apply for a visa unless they intend to leave the UK and re-enter, in which case the baby must have valid immigration permission to re-enter the UK. Therefore, a successful visa application must be made either in the UK prior to leaving, or from the baby’s home country before returning to the UK.

However, if you have recently given birth or are due to give birth to a baby in the UK, then please be aware that their access to secondary health care (specialised hospital treatment) in the UK has now changed (6th April 2015). From the date of the baby’s birth, they are entitled to three months free access to secondary NHS health care. Once they are three months old, they must pay for any secondary health care they may need.

Your baby can only access secondary healthcare by submitting a visa application.

Therefore, we strongly recommend that you submit a visa application for the baby as soon as possible. This is so that the NHS surcharge payment can be made at the time of application, entitling the baby to access any NHS care that they may need after they are three months old.

Can my relatives visit me if I/they do not meet the criteria listed above?

Anyone can apply for entry clearance to visit you in the UK for up to six months as a general visitor. However, please note that if a dependant enters the UK under the visitor category, they will not be able to apply to switch to a Tier 4 dependant or extend current leave from within the UK. They must return home and make a PBS dependant Entry Clearance application (providing that the meey all of the criteria set out above).

Anyone wishing to enter the UK for more than 6 months is required to apply under PBS for a dependant visa (ensuring that the meet all of the criteria set out above).

Can a person apply (switch) to become my dependant if they are currently in the UK under another visa category?

It is possible to switch to the 'Tier 4 Dependant' category if

  • you are currently in the UK under another dependant category under the Points Based System i.e. 'Tier 1 Post Study Work Dependant', OR
  • your current leave is 'Student Dependant' under the old rules OR
  • your current leave is not any of the following:
  1. Visitor
  2. Short term student
  3. Parent of a Tier 4 child
  4. Temporary admission or temporary release in the UK

It means, for example, that it is possible to apply as a Tier 4 dependant after having been in the UK with Tier 4 or other types of leave, without having to leave the UK to apply for entry clearance. Please note that it is NOT possible to switch from the PBS dependant route into Tier 4 from within the UK. You must submit an entry clearance application in such cases.

Recently UKCISA have issued an update on the use of joint bank accounts to demonstrate students’ maintenance for Tier 4 applications.

Should students intend to use a parent’s bank account to demonstrate their maintenance, the account cannot be a joint account between both parents.

If students plan to use a parent’s bank statement as part of their visa application for studying in the UK, there must only be one name on the account.

The only instances where a joint bank account may be used as evidence is if the student is one of the named account holders.

If you have any queries regarding the bank statements, please contact us.
